Membership Policies
Membership qualifications
You qualify for a PROFESSIONAL membership if you are:
- A journalist at an editorially independent newspaper, news service, online news service, syndicate, magazine, television or radio stations or network or
- An instructor or professor of journalism at a university or college or
- An independent journalist who earns more than half of your income producing news stories for editorially independent news outlets and who does not have a job or assignment that requires them to pitch stories to, or answer questions from, other journalists.
PROFESSIONAL members may participate in activities of the organization. They can vote for and serve on the board of directors, vote to change bylaws and vote on any other questions put forth by the board.
You qualify for an ASSOCIATE membership if you are:
- A full-time undergraduate or graduate student or a retired journalist who does not have a job or assignment that requires them to pitch stories to, or answer questions from, other journalists.
- An instructor or professor at a college or university in something other than journalism
- An official of a foundation involved in a journalism-related program. The board may also confer Associate Memberships at its discretion.
ASSOCIATE members may participate in activities of the association but have no voting privileges and cannot serve on the board.
