Congratulations to the 2009 winners!

The Awards for Excellence in Health Care Journalism recognize the best health reporting in print, broadcast and online media. The AHCJ contest, which began in 2004, boasts nine categories.

Entries can include a wide range of health coverage including public health, consumer health, medical research, the business of health care and health ethics.

The Awards for Excellence in Health Care Journalism were created by journalists for journalists and are not influenced or funded by commercial or special-interest groups.

Award categories

  • Metro newspapers (150,000 circulation or more) / national wire services / national Web sites
  • Community newspapers (under 150,000 circulation) / regional wire services / regional or local Web sites
  • General-Interest Magazines above 1 million circulation
  • General-Interest Magazines below 1 million circulation
  • Trade Publications / Newsletters
  • TV (Local markets, network, syndicated)
  • Radio (Local markets, network, syndicated)
  • Multimedia: This category covers all aspects of a multimedia presentation, including the storyand unique online components
  • Beat Reporting: This is an individual award. In the questionnaire, the entrant should explain the beat. You may submit up to four stories, carrying a single byline, to provide a representative sample of your work. You also may submit this work in other categories.

Award winners

First-place winners earn $500 and a framed certificate. First-place winners also receive complimentary lodging for two nights and registration for the annual conference, to be April 22-25, 2010, in Chicago. First-place winners will be recognized at the conference and will be encouraged to appear on panels to discuss their winning work. If there is more than one entrant on the award, it is up to these winners to divide any prize. Lodging will only be covered for one individual in each category.
